Using Hope Industrial Touch Screens with Linux

Ubuntu Operating System

Ubuntu Operating System

“How well do your touch screens work with Linux?” is a question we get very often. While the short answer is always “perfectly!” there is more than one way to support and align our touch screens with Linux operating systems, and which to choose often depends on the particular circumstances of a given application. In this article we will provide a high level overview of some of the more common methods for supporting Linux.

In future articles we will provide step-by-step technical descriptions of how to use these techniques, but in the meantime if you have any specific questions just let us know and we’ll do our best to help you out.

Comparing Compression Gland Cable Exit Plate Options

NEMA 2 (top) and NEMA 4/4X (bottom) Cable Exit Cover Plate Options

NEMA 2 (IP22) (top) and NEMA 4/4X (IP65/66) (bottom) Cable Exit Cover Plate Options

All Hope Industrial Universal Mount Monitors are fully enclosed and feature a standard cable exit interface to allow the cables to exit the display enclosure while maintaining an IP/NEMA-rated seal.

Since every customer’s mounting requirements are different, we provide a variety of cable exit plate options including compression glands, conduit, and blank cover plates (with pre-drilled pilot holes).

Our compression cable exit plates are available in two different types depending on the final enclosure environmental rating required by the customer: NEMA 2 (IP22) or NEMA 4/4X (IP65/66). While these cover plates appear similar once fit to a Universal Mount Display, they are fairly different in design and application. Continue Reading…

Intel NUC i5 installed in Hope Industrial Small PC/Thin Client Enclosure

Many of our customers have found industrial applications for the Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) line of small form factor PCs. While these units do not have many of the features usually associated with industrial designs (no legacy I/O, no case heat sinks), the fact that they are very small, relatively low cost, and only sip power make them appealing in some situations. Tethered Stylus Options for Resistive Industrial Touch Screens

PDA Panache’s large (VTET), medium (MTET), and small (BTET) tethered styluses.

PDA Panache’s large (VTET), medium (MTET), and small (BTET) tethered styluses.

As we’ve talked about in other posts, our touch screen displays use resistive touch technology because of its many benefits to the industrial user. One of the most important of these is the fact that resistive sensors are pressure sensitive, which means that a gloved hand, a stylus, or most anything else can trigger a touch.

While most industrial HMI applications use interface screens designed to simply press with your finger (meaning, large buttons), we have some customers who require a stylus for increased accuracy. Over the years, we’ve recommended PDA Panache styluses to many users. We’ve found the company’s simple and sturdy designs well suited for many industrial environments.

We’ve tested many PDA Panache styluses but we generally recommend the VTET (large), MTET (medium), and BTET (small) models. Continue Reading…
